A much better option for connections is to take flights to Santiago via Paris with Air France, or to travel via the USA - although this may be cumbersome as you will still have to deal with US immigration procedures, and United don't offer flights to Santiago from their hub at New York Newark.
On the other hand, the various airlines that form the LAN network do operate flights throughout the Americas, and also to Madrid. As they are part of the Oneworld alliance, you may well find connections with them and British Airways.
