Destination Summary

The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina has exposed the gaping divide between rich and poor in America's Deep South, especially in New Orleans. Whole neighbourhoods were wiped out, thousands of residents remain homeless or are living in sub-standard temporary accommodation, and the situation is tense. The 'Big Easy' had previously managed to gloss over the high crime rate, poverty and racial tensions by focusing attention on its attractions ' namely the atmospheric French Quarter, the city's legendary jazz clubs, and the raucous Mardi Gras. Miraculously, the French Quarter was largely unaffected, and a downsized Mardi Gras has taken place this Spring, but it will take many years before any sense of normality returns to New Orleans.
