If I want to get things done, I just unplug my modem and put it in another room. In this weather, will need to deflate bike tyres too!

Mark Says
Though Detroit's nickname remains Motor City, much of the region's once flourishing automotive industry has packed up and relocated elsewhere in the hunt for bigger profits. Yet after decades of economic turmoil, Detroit is presently undergoing some form of renaissance - or so General Motors, who've named their downtown headquarters Renaissance Center, would like us to believe. Certainly, the renovated Hart Plaza is a million miles away from the image of Detroit as a place of boarded-up houses and inapproachable slums. But perhaps only the music - the city's most enduring export, from Motown to Eminem - can tell us how it really is to live and love below the bread line. (Or, in Eminem's case, to live on the wrong side of Detroit's 8 Mile boundary.) At Detroit's Motown Museum, you'll witness the modest beginnings of the legendary record label, and the strong black influence on local culture is also much in evidence over at the Wright Museum of African-American History. Altogether more whitebread are the suburbs that form popular day-trip destinations. At Ann Arbor, home of the University of Michigan, some of America's brightest young prospects gather and study, while Dearborn, with its Henry Ford Museum and adjacent Greenfield Museum, busies itself in detailing American glories of the past. With Canada just a short hop across the Detroit River, Motor City provides plenty of reasons to get your engine running - or simply to get on the appropriate bus.
