The capital of Colorado is a small, quiet, compact destination, much loved of car-less travellers, known as “Mile High City”. As one of the conurbations that sprung up in the aftermath of the Gold Rush, Denver boasts a remarkable history and tradition. It’s chronicled in such local tourist favourites as the Colorado History Museum and the Black American West Museum and Heritage Center, which applies an entirely different perspective to the largely Caucasian-written histories of the West.Despite such vibrant cultural hotspots as the recently renovated Denver Art Museum, this is a straight ahead, no-nonsense American destination, often used as a stopping-off point for those venturing into the nearby Rocky Mountains. Denver likes its cuisine all-American - a slightly more sophisticated updating of the grub prospectors used to knock back in the city’s past - and its beer on tap and close to hand; breweries proliferate in this neck of the woods. But above all else, Denver likes its sports. The Denver Broncos are one of the most successful American Football teams of all time and picked up two Superbowl titles in the 1990s, whilst baseball’s Colorado Rockies occupy Coors Field - sports and beer in one go!
