Ryanair have just announced that they will set up their latest base at Billund Airport in Denmark.
At this stage there are no new routes from the UK (I flew to BIllund from Birmingham in 2009, but sadly this route has since been withdrawn).
Considering that Ryanair have a reputation for using out-of-the-way airports, and that some of their worst offenders are in Scandinavia, it is interesting to see that this time, Ryanair have established a base operation at an airport that is so close to the town centre that you can actually walk there.
And why is Billund well worth a visit? Billund may be tiny, but this model town is world famous for one thing - as the home of Lego, including the original Legoland theme park. Lego are the world's biggest toy manufacturer, and in a town so small it isn't even connected to the Danish rail network, the airport was built to serve the needs of the Lego company.
Billund is an ideal gateway for western Denmark, with a variety of flights from a small selection of UK airports.
- Ryanair will continue to operate Flights to Billund from London Stansted, aswell as from Edinburgh.
- Additionally, BA franchise partner Sun Air offer daily flights from Manchester and London City airport to Billund.
- Most passengers visiting Denmark will take flights to Copenhagen. Allow at least 3 hours for a surface transfer (train to Vejle + bus or driving) from Copenhagen Airport.
- Despite its small size, Denmark actually has 5 airports offering inward flights from the UK. The other airports are also on the Jutland peninsular - nearby Esbjerg currently only has flights from Aberdeen, whereas flights from London operate to Aalborg and Aarhus in the northeast.
