Ryanair cuts back flights from Edinburgh

Edinburgh Airport refused to lower fees

Ryanair will be cutting the number of flights it operates from Edinburgh by around 15 per cent after the airport refused to reduce its fees.

The no-frills airline had been trying to force Edinburgh Airport's hand with the lure of more flights from the Scottish capital. Ryanair only accounts for around a fifth of Edinburgh's passengers, so it is in a good position to play hardball with the Irish airline.

Ryanair often pull out completely from airports that refuse to offer them bargain rates, but a total withdrawal was never going to happen given how lucrative core routes like Edinburgh to London Stansted are.

Ryanair's chief executive, Michael O'Leary, said: "Ryanair regrets Edinburgh Airport's rejection of our proposals for a competitive cost base which would allow Ryanair to further grow our traffic and routes for summer 2012.

"Edinburgh cannot continue to ignore the competitive marketplace, where airports all over the UK and Europe have been reducing costs and lowering charges in return for traffic growth. We hope even at this late stage that Edinburgh will realise that the way to grow traffic and jobs is by working with Ryanair to lower passengers fares, not raise them."

They've been bleeding routes from Prestwick for long enough now, so maybe this will at last mean a high water mark!

Or better still, given the split up off BAA, maybe they can bargain hard now for some flights from Glasgow International - that would be long overdue and even more welcome!
