RYANAIR REDUCES FLIGHTS TO PALERMO
Ryanair, Europe's number one low fares airline, today announced the withdrawal of one of its daily services from London Stansted to Palermo in Sicily. Our airport partners are a vital element in our efforts to continue to deliver the best punctuality and least lost bags for our customers. Our performance to date has made us number one for customer service in Europe. Unfortunately Palermo has been one of the worst performing Ryanair airports from an operational point of view and had consistently been among the least punctual in the airline's network. Despite intensive attention and focus by Ryanair staff the operational performance of the airport has not improved over the last number of months. Consequently Ryanair has decided to reduce its exposure at this under-performing airport and is curtailing its activity there by 50% with effect from the end of October.
Commenting on the development Ryanair's Deputy Chief Executive, Michael Cawley, said:
"We are not prepared to contemplate a deterioration in our number one status for punctuality and customer service because one of our airports is not capable of operating efficiently. We have worked consistently and diligently with Palermo Airport over the last six months to improve their operating performance and while there have been sporadic improvements, on a consistent basis they have lagged behind other airports in our network and below an acceptable level of performance. For that reason we are today confirming that with effect from the end of October we will be withdrawing our second daily service to London and furthermore giving the airport notice that unless its operational performance improves in line with all of our other partner airports then we will withdraw our remaining daily service on this route.
It is very regrettable that due to the intransigence and incompetence of the airport management at Palermo millions of Sicilians will be deprived of access to Ryanair's lowest fares in Europe. We see huge commercial potential for this region and the possibility of linking it with many of our bases throughout Continental Europe exists on a commercial basis. However sloppy operational performance which leads to poor punctuality and costly inefficiency for Ryanair will not be tolerated and until such time as the airport management in Palermo gets its act together on that front Ryanair will be delivering its growth elsewhere".
