With the construction of the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) now well underway, London City Airport is delighted to reveal London's most frequent airport rail link. The DLR London City Airport extension will run a service at least every ten minutes from the airport into the UK's leading business communities, Bank serving the centre of the City and to the new business district Canary Wharf.

Richard Gooding, Managing Director of London City Airport said: "This is excellent news for the airport, that by next year passengers travelling via London City Airport will experience maximum flexibility and convenience when making their way to or from the airport. Careful consideration has been given to the London City Airport DLR station to ensure passengers experience a seamless integration between the station and the airport."

The London City Airport Extension will start from the existing DLR south of the Canning Town Station and will run on the south side of Silvertown Way and North Woolwich Road before approaching the airport via Hartmann Road, then extending to King George V in North Woolwich. In total there will be four new additional stations; West Silvertown, Pontoon Dock, London City Airport and King George V.

Richard concludes: "The DLR extension into the airport is scheduled to be fully operational and transporting passengers at the end of December 2005. On average a customer currently travelling via London City Airport saves up to two hours compared with other London Airports. The extension, which brings a new reliable and frequent surface access to the UK's leading business communities, Bank in 22 minutes and Canary Wharf within 14, will further enhance our customers travel experience. Taking into account that today travel choice is largely determined by time spent travelling, I'm confident that the DLR extension will become a preferred mode of transport for the airport's passengers.

"This puts the airport firmly on the public transport map, helping to reduce car journeys by an estimated half a million a year. We will continue to work closely with DLR to help ensure this excellent project is delivered speedily and with minimum disruption."

Flightmapping comment:

If we were being really pedantic, we would point out that the Piccadilly line tube service, running every 2-3 minutes, is the most frequent rail service from London airports into the city centre, even if it is also by far the slowest.

The DLR will undoubtedly bring about vast improvements in access, making flights from London City Airport even more appealing to the time concious traveller. Whereas Canary Wharf already has a reasonably convenient shuttle bus service, the City of London will see the biggest improvement in surface access, with the connection to bank taking just 22 minutes, upping the incentive to avoid Heathrow hassle even further.

Providing seamless connections at Bank will also open up access from throughout London, through the stations excellent connections to the underground network. Bank, and linked station Monument, is situated on no less than four underground routes - Central, Northern, Circle, District, and the (BR operated) Waterloo & City line.
