News: Easyjet in hot water over misleading ad

Flights > News > # 1823 (02/07/2008)

The Advertising Standards Authority has said Easyjet broke advertising rules by claiming it emitted 22% less CO2 than another airline.
Easyjet's newspaper ad said flying "could be 50% cleaner within ten years", adding: "Choose airlines with new aircraft, higher passenger loads, fewer emissions. Easyjet emits 22% less CO2*."
The asterisk referred to an explanation that the claim was based on a comparison between an Easyjet aircraft and a "traditional" airline flying the same aircraft on the same route.
The ruling follows Easyjet being reprimanded by the ASA in April 2007 after making unsubstantiated claims that its planes had 30 per cent less emissions per passenger mile than its rivals.
In March this year, the ASA banned an Easyjet ad promoting cheap summer flights after upholding a complaint from rival no-frills airline Ryanair that the stated fares were misleading due to their restrictive terms and conditions.
The advertising body also banned another Easyjet ad just a month later for promoting discounted fares which they, and the complainants, had been unable to find.
