Scilly Isles Helicopter flights will connect better through Newquay
Flights to the Isles of Scilly will continue to operate from Penzance Heliport until the end of this summer season (31st October).
After this period, British International Helicopters will operate their Scilly Isles flights from Newquay airport instead. This should be a better option for passengers taking flights into Newquay, which you can do from a variety of different airports in the UK and further afield. Meanwhile, the Penzance base remains a better bet for people heading west by train.
Passengers wanting an exciting and scenic way of getting to the Scilly Isles are still spoilt for choice between a helicopter ride, flying in a light aircraft, or going by sea. In my opinion, the best itineraries go out one way and back via a different route - although unfortunately this can get very expensive, as the helicopters are operated by a different company to the ships and fixed wing flights, which are both operated by Isles of Scilly Travel.
Following Ryanair storming off in a huff over the £5 airport user charge, Newquay airport has shown something of a resurgence lately, which is even more surprising considering how much domestic flights are penalised by two sets of APD. The following UK airports now have flights to Newquay - Belfast City, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Manchester, East Midlands and London Gatwick.

For me, it is far easier to get on at Reading than drive all the way to Gatwick and park, especially as Flybe often cost a great deal more than Ryanair did.
Helicopters never did claim any green credentials, but this just makes it worse - instead of walking from Penzance station, you either take the slow branch line to Newquay, then you still have to get to the airport, which is way out of town. Or more people will end up flying to catch these (very short) flights - which is a real shame as they'll miss all the fun of the line as it winds its way through Dawlish Warren.
And for what? So passengers can get a better service? No! Just so Penzance can get yet another greedy supermarket, which it really doesn't need!
Pointless!
