Looking for cheap flights to Copenhagen? How about Malmo?

Copenhagen's Kastrup Airport fits in perfectly with the understated design ethos that has led to the Danish capital's emergence as one of Europe's hippest cities.

Kastrup is spotlessly clean, filled with light, easy to navigate and blessed with a truly integrated public transport system. All this Scandi-cool doesn't come cheap though, resulting in very hefty handling charges for the airlines that use it. This has meant that most of the no-frills carriers have steered well clear. So, what do you do if you want to find cheap flights to Copenhagen?

The nearest alternative to Kastrup is Malmo's Sturup Airport, just across the magnificent Oresund Bridge in Sweden. Budget giant Ryanair have had a tumultuous relationship with Sturup, but late last year they resumed their Flights to Malmo from London Stansted. They have are also just announced new flights from Edinburgh to Malmo.

Is Malmo a viable alternative to Kastrup for getting to Copenhagen? The reality is that in terms of convenience, Kastrup can't be touched, indeed it is also the better option if your final destination is Malmo too. This gives Malmo the dubious distinction of being the only city in the world that is better linked to another airport in a different country than it is to the airport that bears its name.

However, flying isn't all about convenience, and some people just want the best available deal. In this case, despite their ever increasing prices, Ryanair are still hard to beat a lot of the time. It is certainly worth comparing the prices of flights to Copenhagen with their Malmo equivalent, but make sure you compare like with like, and remember to factor in the cost and time of getting from Malmo Airport into the city centre and then across the Oresund to Copenhagen. Allow around 80 minutes to get from Sturup to central Copenhagen compared to just 15 minutes from Kastrup.

All this is academic when you live near rip-off Birmingham, which only offers expensive flights, courtesy of SAS. At least there used to be flights from East Midlands back in the days of Sterling.

I see Ryanair have expanded massively at Edinburgh, an airport of a similar size to Brum. So what chance is there that they will add Malmo flights from Birmingham?

Nil I guess as usual, we'll just get more boring Spanish costa routes!

That's an interesting article, but I'm with my Brummie friend - all pointless when there aren't any flights to Copenhagen or Malmo from Belfast, so we have to go to Dublin anyway.

I suppose if Ryanair started Malmo flights from Prestwick aswell as Edinburgh, we could pop across on the ferry!

Feeling pretty knackered after my trip to Canada and back this afternoon. Canada was very disappointing but the journey was amazing ;)
