Newcastle International airport is the largest in the northeast of England, carrying just under 4.5 million passengers in 2010.

By far the most popular route from Newcastle Airport is to London Heathrow (British Airways), followed by flights to Amsterdam (KLM), Palma-Majorca (various airlines), Alicante (various airlines) and Belfast International (easyJet).

Passengers flying into Newcastle can easily head into the city centre by using the Tyne & Wear Metro, which also continues slowly on as far as Sunderland.

Destination Summary

Newcastle is the largest city in the North East: a place with a fiercely proud industrial heritage, sporting tradition, and a notoriously - how shall we put this delicately? - lively nightlife. Geordies have a reputation for working hard - and playing even harder. A night out in Newcastle's infamous Bigg Market is not forgotten easily; just ask the creators of the adult comic Viz, some of whose creations bear marked resemblances to the sights one might witness on a Saturday night.

One of Newcastle's great trump cards is a cheap and efficient Metro system, which links disparate parts of the city with far greater ease than the London Underground. So it's easy to get around from, say, a day trip to Beamish, the working history museum, to a weekend in Gateshead, whose Baltic Centre and Quays development mark it as yet another part of the current Tyneside renaissance.

The river Tyne hosts two of the city's most prominent monuments. The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is an impressive recent addition to the local skyline, but inevitably pales beside the Tyne Bridge itself, constructed by the same company which built the Sydney Harbour Bridge and a stunning sight at night when viewed from the Quayside.

Culturally, Newcastle can offer the Theatre Royal, a third home for the Royal Shakespeare Company after Stratford and London. But the city's real theatre plays out at St James' Park (woops, we mean the Sports Direct Arena), home to Newcastle United, where passionate crowds have cheered a roll-call of football legends since 1892.

James Says

Newcastle airport has a good range domestic flights, although the only flights to Scotland from Newcastle operate to Aberdeen, courtesy of Eastern Airways - the other major Scottish cities are too close for flights to be viable., but regular direct trains operate from the city's Central station to Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Newcastle has always maintained good links with the larger European hub airports, courtesy of airlines such as KLM (Amsterdam), Air France (Paris), and Lufthansa (Dusseldorf)

Newcastle has not traditionally been seen as a major no-frills hub, but in recent years both easyJet and Jet2.com have established bases here, but despite the ongoing decline of nearby Durham Tees Valley airport - which should have made it an obvious target for Ryanair, neither Newcastle nor Durham has yet to attract a base operation from the Irish no-frills carrier.

There is a wide choice of flights with traditional leisure airlines from Newcastle to a host of holiday hotspots in Spain, Portugal, Turkey and Greece.

On the long-haul front, flights to Asia are available via Dubai with Emirates - with connections also being possible as far as Australia and New Zealand.

The lack of flight to New York, and the connections this would provide, is often lamented on Tyneside. The best bet here is to head down to Manchester if direct flights are available, or otherwise to connect via London or any of the European hubs mentioned above.

All in all, the network of direct flights from Newcastle is quite reasonable, especially when compared to dwindling Tees Valley Airport!
