Flight Summary

Since opening with great promise in April 2005, Doncaster Sheffield airport has expanded relatively slowly, with several routes having been cancelled due to poor demand.

Meanwhile, no-frills carrier Ryanair has chosen to expand massively at nearby East Midlands instead. Ryanair have also opened up a number of routes from Manchester.

Thomson Airways, Thomas Cook Airlines and Wizz Air are the main players at Doncaster Sheffield.

Destination Summary

A visit to any of the South Yorkshire titans - Doncaster, Sheffield, Barnsley or Rotherham - allows a glimpse of the changing face of British industry and working-class culture over the past decades.

Take Sheffield, for example: situated just north of the picturesque Peak District, it enjoyed a substantial reputation for many years as the 'City of Steel', a nickname myriad urban regeneration projects have yet to better.

Doncaster, meanwhile, earned its living from coal mining before the deprivations of the 1980s; today, it's a major technology hub. Only twenty miles from Sheffield, Doncaster has enjoyed many recent renovations - the Lakeside leisure centre and an impressive new stadium, to name but two - but has equally managed to preserve something of the traditions suggested by the Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery and the Museum of South Yorkshire Life at Cusworth Hall. Doncaster Racecourse, one of the largest in the UK, stages the prestigious St. Leger stakes in August every year.

Sheffield is an altogether hillier destination, and can claim more trees per person than any other city in Europe. In some ways, it's a relief to have these green reference points to cling to, as the city has undergone so much transformation of late that whole districts are nowadays unrecognisable to even those who lived there during the 1990s. Examples of new attractions include the Millennium Galleries and the refurbished Weston Park Museum. Some old favourites, however, remain: the world-class swimming facility Ponds Forge, athletics stadium Don Valley, and out-of-town shop-opolis Meadowhall. The connecting trams are, themselves, a reminder of an earlier age.

Quick Facts

  • Airport Code: DSA
  • Alternative Name: Robin Hood

James Says

The network of domestic flights from Robin Hood airport is extremely poor. This is not particularly surprising as it is perfectly easy to reach most major British cities from the South Yorkshire area by road or rail. For an example, the train from Doncaster to London takes just over 1.5 hours, and the East Coast mainline also provides direct services up to all major Scottish cities via York and Newcastle.

Although there might be some latent demand for flights from Doncaster Shffield to southern airports such as Southampton or Exeter, this has not yet materialised.

Mark Says

To my mind Doncaster Sheffield is the perfect example of what a small regional airport should be - clean, simple and efficient.

Feeling pretty knackered after my trip to Canada and back this afternoon. Canada was very disappointing but the journey was amazing ;)
