James Says

I will have to admit that I want to go to Madeira just to experience the landing at the airport. The runway extension, supported on concrete pillars, really is unique in the world, and it was won many plaudits for its astonishing civil engineering.

Naturally, I would want to spend some time on the island too, especially because it has some superb plant life.

As for finding flights to Funchal, there is still a good choice from the traditional charter operators, topped up by a couple of routes each from easyJet and Jet2.

I can't really advise many options for taking connecting flights to Madeira, as most of these would take you via the Portuguese capital Lisbon, which itself is not well fed from UK regional airports. You are generally better off making a surface trip to another UK airport - especially Gatwick or Manchester, rather than trying to find connecting flights.
