Flight Summary

Like Stockholm in neighbouring Sweden, direct flights to Oslo operate into three separate airports - the main Oslo International (Gardemoen), and two airports used by low cost airlines (essentially just Ryanair from the UK and Ireland) - Moss-Rygge and the ridiculously out-of-the-way Torp.

For both style and convenience, Oslo International is far more preferable to either of the other two airports serving Oslo - and don't think that cheap flights to Oslo are confined to these airports either, plenty of low cost options are available to Oslo 'proper' courtsey of Norwegian Air Shuttle.

When it comes to alternative airports, there are those which are quite far away (Rygge isn't actually that much further away than Oslo International, it ist just a lot less convenient as there is no direct train service), there are those that are miles away, and then there are those that might aswell be on another planet. Torp falls into this third category - and considering that Ryanair offer flights to both Torp and Rygge from some of their departure airports, it is well worth trying to get flights from the latte if you can.

I usually prefer to use a so-called expensive airline, and am generally quite loyal to KLM, but they all seem to have priced themselves out of the market this time.

BA, Air France too - I don't know if this is because flights from Edinburgh with any of these airlines mean going south first before heading back up to Oslo. Combined with the need to take two flights instead of one, presumably they just can't compete against a direct cheapie flight with a low cost player?

I know lots of people hate them, but Ryanair are the devil I know, so I am probably going to go with them, or am I better off with Norwegian Air Shuttle?

  The advantage that the legacy airlines offer is that they can still provide a much greater frequency through their usage of the hub and spoke system. If this is not important to you, then you will almost certainly find much cheaper flights to Oslo by going direct with a low cost carrier - except during the busy summer periods, when a connecting flight can sometimes still be cheaper.
  
  Ryanair might be the devil you know, and their punctuality record is indeed hard to beat, but they are going to take you to Oslo Torp, when Norwegian Air Shuttle use Oslo International - altogether a far more pleasant experience!
