Mark Says
The Italian city of Milan is regarded, quite rightly, as one of the world's foremost style capitals - indeed, it's from the city's name that the English word 'milliner' derives. A lot of money flows through these parts - it's also the location for the Italian Stock Exchange (la Borsa Italiana) - and it's partly the case that Milan can simply afford to look good: currently, the city's administrators are recruiting a team of top architects (Hadid, Foster, Libeskind et al.) to give the place a 21st century makeover. Would-be fashionistas are directed to the high-end boutiques of the Quadrilato d'Oro, while those on a budget might be better off perusing the strikingly designed Galleria Vittorio Emanuelle mall.If fashion is the primary religion of Milan, Catholicism is the second. The grand cathedral known as the Duomo, stocked from floor to remarkable roof with religious treasures, is the second largest place of worship in Italy, and the third largest in the world. Other faiths compete for the traveller's attention: the rivalry between local football teams (and regular Champions' League contenders) AC and Inter has been known to get Biblical at times, and both teams have histories as turbulent, if not more so, as anything witnessed playing out on the two sides' San Siro pitch.
Cultural highpoints include La Scala, the famed opera house that has staged great works by Rossini, Verdi and Toscanini over the centuries; be warned, tickets tend to be a) expensive and b) in limited supply. DaVinci codebreakers might like to puzzle over the artist's early drawings and notebooks (at the Museo Nazionale Scienza e Tecnica) or one of his most famous canvasses, The Last Supper, on display at the Santa Maria delle Grazie church. (A word to the wise: book in advance.) Alternative, altogether less stressful entertainment can be found from a seat at a pavement café, watching the bold and the beautiful of Milan using the city's streets as their own personal catwalk.
