Flight Summary

The city airport in Florence is much more restricted, compared to nearby Pisa, and currently only offers direct flights from London. Although connections are available from some other European hubs, it is usually much easier to find flights to Pisa instead.

Quick Facts

  • Airport Code: FLR
  • Alternative Name: Peretola
  • Miles From City Centre: 3
  • Miles From London: 1201

James Says

Unless you live in or near London, you won't be able to find any direct flights to Florence from the UK. This is largely because Florence's Peretola airport is heavily constrained, both due to noise restrictions owing to its heavily urbanised location and because of its relatively short runway.

Flights to Florence versus Pisa

The vast majority of people looking for flights to Florence will end up flying into nearby Pisa airport instead, which also sells itself as Pisa-Florence.

If you are planning a city break in the beautiful Renaissance city of Florence itself then you can easily travel by train direct from Pisa airport to Santa Maria Novella Station in Florence, with a journey time of around an hour and a half.

If you're planning a driving tour around Tuscany, you could just as easily pick up a hire car at Pisa airport, which has a wider choice of rental options compared to Florence.

However, flights to Pisa tend to be operated by low-cost airlines and in many cases, they only operate a couple of times each week. Also, although many UK airports offer flights to Pisa, there are a number of notable exceptions, and in particular there are no flights from Birmingham to Pisa. Ironically, Birmingham is a major base for the regional airline Flybe, whose smaller commuter jet aircraft would easily be able to use Florence airport.

If you want to be in Florence around a particular time, you may find it is better to fly into Pisa with one airline and fly back to a different airport with another. Pisa airport is used by most of the major budget airlines.

Alternative options

There are also direct train services between Florence and Milan Malpensa airport, although bizarrely they only operate twice each day. This journey will take around two and half hours, although at any other time, you will have to allow little bit more time to change in Milan Centrale.

Slightly further afield, Venice and Rome also have a wide selection of flights from the UK, but these options are only really worth doing if you want to combine your visit to Florence with these cities.Note that this is extremely easy to do if you are sticking to the high speed rail spine that runs between Milan and Rome.

Bologna also sits between Milan and Florence, although it no longer has such a good range of flights from UK regional airports.

Connecting flights

If flying into Pisa isn't an option and you don't want to travel via another Italian city, you can take connecting flights to Florence from a small selection of other major European airports, such as Paris Charles de Gaulle.

Feeling pretty knackered after my trip to Canada and back this afternoon. Canada was very disappointing but the journey was amazing ;)
