Don't be fooled into thinking Araxos is some kind of Athens west, but it is a useful gatway to the Peloponnese.
However, if you are into engineering, then pick up a hire car and you can make a nice little circuit driving across the stunning Rio-Antirio Bridge, and then looping round through Athens and then across the Corinth Canal.
Greece might not offer much to the rail buff, but you can do a nice circuit heading clockwise from Patras, if you have the time.
