Whilst you should have no problem finding flights from London to Frankfurt, the availability of flights to Frankfurt from other parts of the UK is nothing like as substantial as it is to its main rival hubs in Paris and Amsterdam. This is largely due to the fact that Frankfurt and does not have anything like the same level of appeal as a tourist destination. Although Frankfurt remains extremely important for connecting flights, the airport growth has been constrained by similar local environmental concerns to those which have hemmed in Heathrow from further development, therefore keeping airport charges high, and discouraging the development of budget flights into Frankfurt's main international airport. On the other hand, Frankfurt is still an extremely important hub for Lufthansa, offering more international destinations than any other airport in the world.
UK Cities with Direct Flights to Frankfurt International
From the UK, Lufthansa currently offer direct flights to Frankfurt from London (Heathrow), Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh. British Airways match Lufthansa on all of these routes, except Edinburgh. British Airways additionally offer flights to Frankfurt from Gatwick and City Airport in London, as well as having recently launched commuter flights to Frankfurt from Bristol.
Budget flights to Frankfurt international
The only budget airline with any kind of presence at Frankfurt is Air Berlin, who offer flights from London Stansted to Frankfurt, although the frequency is nothing like that available from either Heathrow or Gatwick.
Frankfurt Hahn
Frankfurt Hahn is a former military base, some 75 miles to the west of Frankfurt city centre. Together with Stockholm's Skavsta and Vasteras airports, Frankfurt Hahn shares the honour of being the most distant airport from the respective city centre it serves. By contrast, Frankfurt International is a mere eight miles from downtown Frankfurt.
Surface Connections
Whereas Frankfurt International boasts extremely regular train services not only to the centre of Frankfurt, but also throughout Germany courtesy of the ICE express train network, Frankfurt Hahn merely offers a coach service in coordination with the Ryanair flights which operate there.
Mark Says
Situated on the Main River , 50 miles south-east of the industrial Ruhr region, Frankfurt is one of Europe's leading financial centres and the transport hub of Germany .
Home to the German stock exchange and hundreds of banks, Frankfurt is one of the few cities in Europe to have built upwards rather than outwards. The 'Mainhattan' nickname is probably a little over the top - Frankfurt is certainly no New York - but the city does boast Europe 's tallest skyscraper.
Unfortunately Frankfurt has the image of being nothing more than a banking centre, or somewhere to change train or plane, but scratch beneath the gleaming surface and there is plenty on offer for visitors. Desperate to shake off its yuppie reputation, huge amounts of money have been pumped into the city's arts and culture scene over the past 20 years. As a result Frankfurt is chock full of outstanding museums and galleries.
The Main River cuts east-west through the city. The financial district, central station and old town are all north of the river. South of the river is the quaint Sachsenhausen district, where many of the best clubs and pubs are located.
Finding a good-value place to stay in Frankfurt can be difficult because most hotels are geared towards the business market. Book in advance if possible or expect to pay a premium, especially if a big convention is in town. Don't be tempted by the cheap hotels around the main station - many of them double-up as brothels.
