James Says

Frankfurt Hahn is a former military base, some 75 miles to the west of Frankfurt city centre. So why on earth would anyone ever want to take a flight to Frankfurt Hahn? Price is the obvious answer, especially considering that other budget airlines such as easyJet have no presence at Frankfurt International. The other key advantage of taking cheap flights to Frankfurt Hahn is that the airport offers much simpler facilities, which are a great deal cheaper to use and easy to navigate. Whereas Frankfurt International has a plethora of budget-busting eateries and shopping facilities; Hahn has one (rather good) restaurant, a little bar, a newsagent, as well as a few stores (including the seemingly mandatory sex shop). Frankfurt Hahn also offers a reasonable range of car hire opportunities, with a huge advantage of being able to walk straight out of the terminal and drive away. Frankfurt Hahn is also very much a regional, rather than a city airport. Within a two-hour drive of Frankfurt Hahn, it is possible to reach other major cities such as Cologne, Bonn, Luxembourg and Strasbourg, as well as Frankfurt itself.
Ultimately, apart from price, the decision whether to take flights into Frankfurt International or Frankfurt Hahn, might rest primarily on the choice of onward transport to reach your final destination. Hahn will appeal if you're planning on driving, whereas International offers the widest choice for onward connections by train. And if taxis are your preferred means of getting from the airport to the city centre, then expect the fare from Hahn to downtown Frankfurt to cost considerably more than your flight did. If you are going to resort to this option, try finding a few fellow passengers to share a ride with!

@Jodatu High speed should be just that - limited stop (which hs2 is), stations that provide onward connections (which hs2 does very poorly)

@Jodatu You wouldn't want 3 stations in Birmingham serving #HS2 - also, double deck, 400m long trains not compatible with classic track

@Jodatu You could make that argument about any central station or hub airport. Reality is, origin + connection passengers justify both
