Flight Summary
Denmark's capital city is an expensive airport to use, stopping airlines like easyJet from offering more flights there. Some passengers opt to fly to Malmo instead, and use the stunning Oresund river crossing to reach the centre of Copenhagen.
Destination Summary
The stylish Danish capital is one of Europe's most exciting cities, a genuine 24 hour party paradise that is also packed with beautiful buildings and superb shops.
Quick Facts
- Airport Code: CPH
- Alternative Name: Kastrup
- Miles From City Centre: 7
- Miles From London: 958

Copenhagen Kastrup is the most important airport in Scandinavia, and consequently has a good range of inbound flights from many parts of the UK. Denmark has had mixed fortunes in terms of attempts to attract more no-frills airlines to offer cheap flights to Copenhagen. easyJet had previously operated flights from both Bristol and Newcastle to the Danish capital, but have since retreated back to London, complaining about the high costs imposed by the ultra-modern Kastrup Airport. Sterling Airways, who took over Maersk in 2005, currently operate cheap flights to Copenhagen from London Gatwick, but Maersk's former route from Manchester has been scrapped.
Alternative airports
If you are unable to find suitably cheap flights to Copenhagen, it is worth having a look at the price of Ryanair's flights to Malmö in southern Sweden. The two countries are now linked by the impressive Oresund bridge, cutting the journey time from Malmo to Copenhagne by car or train down to less than an hour.
Route developments
Last year, the Danish government scrapped Air Passenger Duty, following extensive complaints from airlines about how this charge was discouraging tourists from visiting the country. So far, despite the removal of this tax, and the willingness of many of us here in the UK to show our support for our freethinking Danish cousins, Copenhagen continues to remain largely off-limits for the no-frills airlines.

Copenhagen has a lot going for it; it has the highest standard of living of any capital in the world, and is the largest, most dynamic, and cosmopolitan city in Scandinavia . Copenhagen is also one of the most attractive and well planned cities in Europe , unspoilt by high-rise buildings, only pretty church spires make any kind of mark on the skyline. The colourful Danish capital is a wonderful place to stroll around and there is a fantastic range of things to see and do, including top quality museums, galleries and palaces. The Danes cherish good design, and this is not only evident in the stylish clothes shops and furniture stores of Copenhagen , but right down to seemingly mundane objects like playground equipment. Cyclists will feel very much at home here too, not only is it uniformly flat, but there is also a superb cycleway network stretching across the whole city. Copenhagen offers some of the best bars and clubs in Europe . The city comes alive at night as revellers descend on the Stroget, a group of pedestrianised streets that cut through the city centre. During the summer crowds flock to Tivoli Gardens , an amusement park in the heart of the city, famed for its spectacular late-night fireworks displays. For those looking for something a bit different, head over to the ' Freetown ' of Chris tiania ; an autonomous alternative community set up on an abandoned barracks in the early 1970s. The best time to visit Copenhagen is either side of the summer peak (July and August) when the weather is generally pleasant but it is not too crowded. Copenhagen offers a broad range or accommodation, but you are advised to book ahead during the busy summer months.

I have only ever slept inside airport terminals twice - once in Newark (not too bad) after a long journey across the US, and once in Manchester because I had a few hours between a concert and the first train home the next morning.
I don't personally recommend sleeping in airports, firstly because it is rarely very comfortable and secondly because there is a security risk - especially at CDG! There is someone who's made a specialist subject of sleeping in airports - see http://www.sleepinginairports.net/.
You don't say where you are going from / to or how much you are saving by going this way, but I think it can be a false economy just to save a few pounds.
I wrote a bit about this in the context of splitting tickets to avoid long haul APD here - http://www.flightmapping.com/james-blog/guide-to-apd-tax-dodging
CPH is a lovely airport, and I wouldn't see any problem spending 6 hours there in the day, even though the food is extortionate.
My problem is that you are only allowing 6 hours - if you can extend that to leave CPH a bit later, then you could easily venture into town, find a hostel (there are several within a 10 minute walk of the main station) and take a look around.
Copenhagen really is a wonderful city, even if you are just there for a few hours.
From the counter culture Christiania to the more formal architectural and engineering feats, Copenhagen is a city of incredible ingenuity - see http://www.flightmapping.com/james-blog/seven-wonders-of-denmark-architecture-and-engineering.
