Destination Summary
Antwerp is known as the World's diamond capital, although defenders of Amsterdam would probably dispute this claim just as much as geographers will dispute whether or not Amsterdam is even the capital of Holland (or should that be the Netherlands?). Antwerp if fast becoming one of the best places to shop in europe and with good food, great architectural achievements such as Antwerp central station, it's a place you will fall in love with straight away. If you are looking to take a short weekend break to Antwerp on the train then it might be worth looking at Eurostar ticket and hotel deals. Even if you want to book a last minute trip, this can often be the best way to find a cheap city break.

Note that although there are trains from Brussels airport to Antwerp, these have to crawl through the three stations in Brussels city centre first, making the coach a much better option for getting from Zaventem to Antwerp. Whilst Eurostar offer the advantage of free onward rail travel within Belgium, the option of connecting trains from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is also worth exploring.

I would consider going by train, but by the time you allow time for connections, I think the journey is just too long for what I'd ideally like to be a day trip.

Antwerp is one of several beautiful Belgian gems, and I will be making a brief visit there myself in a couple of weeks' time. For leisure visitors, it really is very easy to get to using Eurostar via Brussels Midi. Connections to Eurostar from anywhere in the East Midlands are extremely easy as you can change under one roof at St Pancras.

There is very little difference, so you would essentially be swapping Brussels South for Brussels North.
b) an actual city people want to go to and
They might indeed, but Ryanair would have to be able to land there, and the runway at Antwerp is just too short for them.
c) good for Rotterdam too?
Rotterdam Airport can serve the Rotterdam market, I don't really see Antwerp as being an alternative (see above). Much easier just to look for flights to Amsterdam and jump on the train - ok, you taxi for ages and you have a long walk through the terminal, but there are always going to be far more UK cities with flights to Brussels and Amsterdam than there are with flights to Antwerp or Rotterdam.

Considering its size, I think Antwerp is pretty easy to get to if you use the right combination of train and plane - and the city itself is wonderful once you get there. The station gives you a good hint of what you are in for!
