There are daily high-speed boat services across the River Plate between the Argentine capital Buenos Aires and Montevideo. The journey takes just under three hours and certainly provides a dramatic way into Uruguay if you can't find a suitable flight to Montevideo.

I've read quite a few articles lately highlighting Uruguay as a niche travel destination. Do you think there will ever be direct flights to the UK from Uruguay?

  Bob, I very much doubt it, too much of a niche market, and just too far for BA to be interested! There are plenty of flights to Montevideo and other places in Uruquay from within South America, and also good ferry service across from Argentina - that's the route I'd take.

    I wouldn't call the ferry service from BA to Montevideo good! As Mark points out above, there is only one ferry per day between the two capitals. Personally speaking, I'd fly into BA and then catch a short-hop flight across to Montevideo.
