Destination summary
Switzerland was memorably described by Harry Lime (Orson Welles) in the 1949 film 'The Third Man' as a nation of "chocolate and cuckoo clocks". Though reductive, that alliterative phrase had behind it an understanding of Switzerland as the peaceable heart of Old Europe, concerned only with delicious confectionery and perfect timekeeping even as the rest of the world went to war around it.
Inevitably, this oft-stated cliché - the Swiss as politically neutral and economically stable, all the better to preserve the idyllic calm of Lakes Geneva and Constance, the serene beauty of its mountains and forestry - has some truth to it. Yet with the financial tumult of bankers' paradise Zurich, wintersports action on offer in such resorts as Zermatt and St. Moritz, and the river Rhine hastening its way through Basel/Basle, it's not all peace and quiet.
And, perhaps rightly for the home of UEFA and FIFA, Switzerland serves as one of the great connecting nations: visitors are only ever a day trip away from France, Germany, Austria, Italy or even little Liechtenstein.
Flight summary

Geneva is a major gateway to the western Alpine ski resorts and is by far the best served Swiss city, with flights available from all of the major British airports. As one of Europe's most important financial centres, Zurich attracts flights firmly geared towards business customers.
Finding cheap flights to Switzerland is largely dependent on which airport you choose as your entry point. In the west of the country, Geneva has seen a great deal of expansion as a no-frills gateway, with easyJet's Swiss subsidiary having a very substantial operation there. To the east, high infrastructure costs, combined with a tough environmental regime, have kept most budget airlines out of Zurich. However, easyJet have instead chosen to relocate many of the flights which they would have otherwise operated to and from Zurich to Basel instead.

I'm a self-confessed lover of all things Swiss (apart from Herr Blatter of course!), but it is the Alpine country's train system that impresses me most. The Jungfraujoch line in particular is one of the most impressive feats of engineering in Europe, with views almost as jaw dropping as the ticket prices!
It can often be advantageous to purchase rail passes before leaving the UK, although it is also possible to purchase a discounted Swiss transfer ticket when arriving at Geneva or Zurich airports, both of which have railway stations inside their terminals.
Ideally, try and find flights as close to your final destination is possible, as the money saved on a cheaper flight to a more distant city can easily be counterbalanced by the high cost of ground transfers, even when discounted train tickets are purchased - the Swiss trains are generally even more expensive than those in the UK, but at least they run on time.

The Jungfrau region is stunning, but it is one of many ski and outdoor pursuit resort areas. Geneza and Zurich airport, with their easy (but expensive) rail connections, together with loads of coach transfers from Geneva, serve that market much more effectively than Bern could.
