Destination summary
Traditionally, Sweden has always been regarded as a nation obsessed with health and efficiency, the land that gave us the sauna, the smorgasbord, flat-pack furniture, and Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight). Though the air remains as clean as it ever was, there's something a little fresher about latter-day Sweden: a youthful vibe that manifests itself in the music of Kleerup, Robyn and Lykke Li, the rebellious films of Lukas (Together) Moodysson, and fashion labels such as Nudie.
The major destinations remain the capital Stockholm, a vibrant, modern European city spread over 14 small islands, and to the south, homely Malmo, with its close links to Copenhagen. Beyond these cities, Sweden is blessed with invigorating landscapes: rolling hills, pine and spruce forests, mountains and glaciers. Winter sports inevitably feature high on the agenda, with World Cup skiing action at Åre alongside curling and cross-country events. With Lapland, its reindeers, husky dogs and old Saint Nick, located to the north, Sweden really does have something for all ages, all year around.
Flight summary
Direct flights are available to three Swedish cities from the UK - Gothenburg, Malmo and the capital Stockholm. Gothenburg is served by two airports, Stockholm boasts three airports served by UK flights.
Bear in mind that Stockholm's Vasteras and Skavsta "Ryanairports" are both a considerable distance from the city they serve. Although there are currently no budget airlines offering flights into Stockholm's Arlanda airport, it is well worth paying a bit extra to arrive closer to the city centre.
Gothenberg, by contrast, is one of the few cities where Ryanair's airport of choice, Saeve, is actually closer to the centre of town than the city's main airport, Landvetter.

Connecting flights to other cities in Sweden are generally available via Stockholm, although some of the larger cities are also connected to the Danish capital Copenhagen, which is the main base for SAS Scandinavian Airlines. A limited number of connecting flights to Sweden are available via other European hubs, such as Amsterdam. Southern Sweden can also easily be reached from Copenhagen by car or train via the spectacular Oresund Bridge.
