Flight summary
Since joining the European Union (EU) in January 2007, the availability of cheap flights to Romania has notably increased, although it is still some way off becoming the kind of budget airline hotspot that some travel industry pundits predicted.
There have been plenty of flights to Bucharest from London for many years, with both British Airways and national carrier Tarom, continuing to offer regular daily flights from London Heathrow. These flights operate into Bucharest's larger Henri-Coanda international airport (OTP). The budget airline Wizzair was the first company to take advantage of Romania's new EU membership, launching cheap flights to Bucharest's original airport, Baneasa (BBU), from Luton back in 2007.
Beyond Bucharest, opportunities for flights to the rest of Romania are somewhat limited, although Tirgu Mures in Transylvania and the western city of Timisoara do at least have direct flights from the UK.

We are often asked why there aren't already more cheap flights to Romania. With concern mounting over rising fuel costs, the relatively long distance between the UK and Romania is certainly a factor, although the simple reality is that there is not enough potential business yet to justify a huge growth in new routes.
As the Romanian economy continues to grow, along with efforts to promote Romania's considerable inbound tourism potential, we expect to see more new routes announced. The Black Sea resort of Constanta would be an obvious choice for flights from the UK.
