Destination summary
Few films have had so great an effect on a country's tourist industry as the Lord of the Rings trilogy. This was as good a brochure as director Peter Jackson's native New Zealand could want - nine or so hours of rolling countryside, snowy mountaintops, and mysterious caverns - banishing forever the image of two green, quiet islands where sheep outnumber people. In fact, the sheep are still there; it's just that, at the moment, they're outnumbered by Frodo freaks trudging up hill and down dale in the hope of communing with Gandalf.
Of the two islands, North Island hosts the capital Wellington and the popular destination Auckland, while South Island proves more rural and mountainous, reaching its peak, so to speak, with the 3,800 ft Mount Cook. Queenstown, the self-proclaimed world capital of adventure sport, is also on South Island.
Flight summary
Non-stop flights from the UK to New Zealand are not possible due to the sheer distance between the two countries, but one-stop services to Auckland are available with Air Zealand from London Heathrow.
The fact that there is only one airline offering "same-plane" flights from the UK to New Zealand means that bargain fares are hard to come by.
There are plenty of connecting flight option though, so it is well worth considering the various differences in terms of stopover opportunities, and quality of airline service.
As with finding flights to Australia, seat pitch should be given particular consideration, and it is worth noting that Air New Zealand are one of the most generous operators here, with a standard seat pitch of 34 inches in economy class. Additionally, Air New Zealand offer the possibility of taking a connecting flight to Christchurch via Los Angeles, as well as an extensive range of domestic connections from Auckland.
Asian cities such as Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong are the most popular choices for passengers heading east. Singapore Airlines carry more passengers on flights to New Zealand from the UK than any other airline.

There are numerous other combinations you could use to get to New Zealand, travelling via any number of airports in Asia or in the West Coast of the USA / Canada. That is where OTAs (online travel agents) are most useful - but they will often sell tickets labelled as one airline, but operated by another, and sometimes they will include flights labelled as direct, but which actually need a change of aircraft en-route.
