Flying to the Netherlands usually means flying to Amsterdam's mammoth Schiphol airport, but there are other options if you are looking to explore some of the country's lesser known regions.

Even though the Dutch operate an efficient rail network, with many direct links being available from Schiphol airport itself, their trains are not particularly fast, and it can take up to three hours to reach the far corners of the Netherlands from Amsterdam.

Regular flights are available from the UK to Rotterdam, Eindhoven and Groningen. One advantage of using these smaller airports is that they are much simpler to use – Schiphol airport is so big that taxiing times and trekking from the gate to the arrivals hall can easily add half-an-hour on to your journey - worth taking into account if you are on a tight schedule.
