Destination summary

It's possible Westerners' impressions of modern-day Japan remain somewhat warped: vending machines selling used underwear and incredibly violent pornography, intended for the enjoyment of the perpetually nodding salaryman.

Even a supposedly "sensitive" Western film like 'Lost in Translation' was accused of latent racism in its portrayal of the Japanese. Yet if Japan seems weird to the outsider, it's perhaps partly down to ignorance, and partly down to a frantic desire to be ahead of the curve in both design and technology: a couple of hours amongst the country's arcades and neon-lit multi-megastores, and the avant-garde begins to seem almost normal.

Tokyo continues to attract the most tourism, mainly as it's the most Western (and therefore least disorientating) destination, though even hardened travellers tend to experience some form of culture shock. Yet spread out over numerous islands, from Hokkaido in the north to Kyushu in the south, Japan takes in rural and mountainous terrain, and one of the abiding clichés holds true: wherever you go, the people really are that courteous and welcoming.

Flight summary

The two gateway cities for flights from the UK to Japan are Tokyo and Osaka. There is much stronger competition for flights to Tokyo, with two British airlines and two Japanese carriers operating the route, whereas just Japan Airlines offer direct flights from the UK to Osaka.

All direct flights to Japan are concentrated around London - there are no flights to Japanese cities from any UK regional airports. The new "Centrair" airport in Nagoya has direct links from two European cities, Frankfurt (Lufthansa) and Helsinki (Finnair). Major Japanese cities such as Sapporo and Fukuoka are well linked within Asia.

Despite increased interest in Japan following the 2002 World Cup, the majority of flights to the country are aimed at the business market, making it pretty tricky to find bargain fares.

One thing to bear in mind when trying to reach other Japanese cities is that you might be required to transfer between the international and domestic airports in either Tokyo or Osaka. This can be a significant hassle compared to connecting via another Asian hub where no change of airport is necessary.

Japan is also well known for having an excellent high-speed rail system, with the famous Shinkansen bullet train network radiating out from Tokyo. However, unlike in countries such as France and Germany, the high-speed trains do not actually run through any of the major airports. However, both Tokyo Narita and Osaka Kansai airports have excellent shuttle train links with their respective city centres, from where the bullet trains can also be taken.

Congrats to the Royal Town's adopted son, Roberto Di Matteo, for guiding Chelsea to the biggest trophy in club football.
