This most exotic of destinations has traditionally been regarded as the venue of those in search of spiritual enlightenment and perfect karma. In actual fact, latter-day India, with its baking heat and crowded marketplaces, can be a less calming experience than many a Gap year trustafarian makes out - which is precisely why the nation's temples and mosques (and, if we are to count the movies as an unofficial religion of India, its cinemas) come to offer such relief.
The country's major cities have long since shrugged off their former status of colonial outposts and assumed rich, complex identities of their own.
Mumbai, the bustling "City of Dreams", plays home to the bulk of the Bollywood film industry, while the capital Delhi, a key travel hub connecting visitors to all parts of the sub-continent, serves as most travellers' introduction to culture shock, Indian style. Despite the increased range of direct flights to India, there is still far more demand than there is supply, meaning that many of the best deals are on connecting flights rather than direct services. Most of these operate via hubs in the Middle East, such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Bahrain.

I have been to India twice - once via Delhi to include Agra and Rajastan, and another time through Mumbai and covering the southern part of the country. It really is a fascinating place to visit, but each time I had to take flights via Dubai, which is a shame as I'd much rather go direct.
