Destination summary
With the exception of perhaps the ultra-remote Faroe Islands, Finland has the reputation of being the quietest nation in Scandinavia. Far from the Germanic roistering of the Danes, the art-rock stylings of the Icelandic, or even the bustling efficiency of Sweden, the Finns are generally characterised as stray Moomins roaming idyllic twilight landscapes, cast out at the furthest reaches of the Arctic Circle.
Actually, the beautiful illustrations that so lit up Tove Janssen's beloved series of children's books (and later, the popular animated adaptations) have their roots very firmly in Finland's myriad of forests and lakes.
And while some of the quiet introspection tag holds true, the country's primary influence turns out to be Eastern European: capital Helsinki looks out over the Gulf of Finland towards Tallinn in Estonia, then to Latvia and Lithuania further south.
With Lapland to the north, this is also a favoured destination amongst youngsters keen to personally hand Christmas lists over to a man the idiosyncrasies of the Finnish language and the Lapp tongue probably render as Snt.
Flight summary
The distance between the UK and Finland makes the country unattractive to the no-frills airlines, which generally prefer to offer cheap flights to countries much closer to home. The one exception to this is Ryanair, who offer flights to Tampere and Turku. A number of "Santa Special" charter flights to Finnish Lapland are offered during the winter season.
There is a good frequency of flights from London to Helsinki, but budget minded travellers who can't face flying with Ryanair might consider finding flights to other Baltic states such as Estonia and Latvia, where airport charges are much lower. This is a very interesting way of getting to Finland if your aim is to spend a couple of weeks doing a tour of the Baltic, but even the shortest ferry links between the Estonian capital Tallinn and Helsinki can take three to four hours.

I'd rather just take a flight to Helsinki from Manchester, which is my local airport, and then either get a local connection or take the train.
Stansted is quite a treck from where I am, especially for an early flight - I'd definitely do the Helsinki option if I knew there were a few things to see there - he says it is certainly worth a look, but he would say that, he's an architect!
