Flight summary

If you thought that finding flights to Estonia was all about finding flights to Tallinn, then think again. Although the Estonian capital has good links from London, trying to reach Tallinn from any other UK airport is not so straightforward, as our Tallinn flights page shows. You will often be much better off by taking flights to the Latvian capital Riga, and travelling on to Tallinn by coach.

You might also be surprised that such a seemingly small country also has two other viable commercial airports - Parnu and Tartu - as well as several island airports such as Kuressaare, Kardla, Kihnu and Ruhnu.

Travel within Estonia

If you are trying to reach other destinations in Estonia outside Tallinn, then we would recommend hiring a car, as public transport is generally slow and infrequent. It is also possible to take flights from Tallinn to outlying islands such as Hiumaa (Kardla airport), and Saaremaa (Kuressaare airport). To reach the tiny island of Kihnu or Ruhnu, you will have to take flights from the resort of Parnu.

Trains are operated by Eesti Raudtee (Estonian Railways), but their website is incredibly difficult to use. Domestic buses can be looked up at Bussi Reisid (in English). There are major routes connecting Tallinn with major cities such as Tartu, Parnu, Rakvere, Narva, Kuressaare, and Viljandi. This website acts as a portal for all bus operators in the country, and includes links between regional cities, for example between Parnu and Tartu.

Travel between Estonia and her neighbours

Latvia

As mentioned above, regular coaches are available between the Latvian capital Riga and Tallinn. There is also a coach service between Riga and St Petersburg in Russia, which travels via the Estonian cities of Tartu, Kohtla-Jarve and Narva.

Unfortunately, there are no international train connections between Latvia and Tallinn. If you are travelling between Riga and Tallinn, we recommend breaking your journey in the coastal resort of Parnu. You can also travel on from Parnu to Tallinn by train.

Finland

Regular fast ferries operate between the Estonian capital Tallinn and the Finnish capital Helsinki. See our flights to Tallinn or flights to Helsinki pages for further details.

Russia

Surprisingly, there are no direct trains from Tallinn to St Petersburg, although there is an overnight sleeper service between Tallinn and Moscow, operated by Go Rail. This train heads east from Tallinn towards the border town of Narva, before joining the main St Petersburg to Moscow express line, but if you want to go direct between Tallinn and St Petersburg, you will have to go by coach.

Sweden

Ferries from Stockholm to Tallinn

This is only really worth considering if you are travelling as part of a group. The Tallink Silja line overnight ferry from Stockholm to Tallinn departs each evening at 6 PM, and arrives in Tallinn at 10AM the following morning. If you are travelling on your own, you will have to fork out for a minimum four-berth cabin because it is not possible to travel seat only on this ferry.

Congrats to the Royal Town's adopted son, Roberto Di Matteo, for guiding Chelsea to the biggest trophy in club football.
