Destination summary
The Dominican Republic, which occupies the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola, has some spectacularly beautiful scenery and some of the best beaches in the world.
The country has a mountainous central spine boasting the highest peak in the Caribbean, the 3,175-m Pico Duarte, and is famous for its native amber. It is also a haven for watersports enthusiasts. No wonder Christopher Columbus called it the 'fairest land under heaven.'
The Republic has become a popular holiday destination with British tourists during the past decade as all-inclusive hotel developments have sprung up across the sunny east coast. The country also offers many family-run hotels which offer a more personalised service. Some of the colonial houses in historic capital Santo Domingo which have been converted into hotels are fantastically opulent. Alas Santo Domingo, which lies on the estuary of the River Ozama on the south coast of the country, is all too often passed by as holidaymakers head to the resorts. It is the oldest European colonial city in the Americas and sympathetic restoration of the old colonial heart has made the area very attractive, with open-air cafes and pleasant squares near the waterfront.
The biggest draw in the Dominican Republic is naturally the beaches, many of which are picture postcard perfect, blessed with fine white sand, and coconut palms gently swaying in the breeze. The most popular and developed beaches are in the east, around Punta Cana, whereas the north tends to be quieter and more secluded - although the hugely popular resort of Puerto Plata is on the northern side. The north side of the country is also home to some of the best windsurfing spots in the world.
Unfortunately the Dominican Republic does have a seamy side and has become a major 'sex tourism' hotspot in recent years. Pimps and hookers have even been known to approach honeymooning couples touting their business. A firm 'no' usually does the trick (if you'll pardon the pun).
Flight summary
Out of all Caribbean destinations, the Dominican Republic generally has the best selection of flights from the UK. By far the most popular destination for Dominican Republic flights is Puerto Plata, although a good selection of flights is also available to Punta Cana. There are also regular flights to La Romana and Samana, as well as the capital, Santo Domingo.
Although the majority of people visiting the Dominican Republic do so as part of a holiday package, growing demand for investment property in the area, together with a niche market for independent travellers, has ensured that there are always some seat-only deals available on flights to the Dominican Republic, especially with operators like British Airways and Thomson.

I love the Caribbean, but not the Dom Rep. I've booked a holiday in Barbados this year instead!
