When the Iron Curtain was lifted in the late 1980s, few Eastern European countries opened up to visitors quite as invitingly as what was then Czechoslovakia.

Since its amicable split with Slovakia in the early 90s, the Czech Republic has continued to attract travellers from all around the globe, merrily shrugging off its former reputation as the stern and forbidding engine room of hardline Communism. Nowadays, the Republic is probably best known as a favoured venue for overseas stag nights.

Actually, there's plenty here to be explored with a clear head. Prague, striking a fine balance between the Old World and a contemporary European capital, remains a formidable centre of culture, while the northern spa town of Karlovy Vary has grown in prominence over recent years due to the rising profile of its international film festival.

The Sudeten mountains and forests of latter-day Bohemia provide picturesque countryside, while the Republic's geographical position makes it especially attractive for backpackers, providing a gateway between 'mainstream' Europe (Germany, Austria) and less explored territories (Hungary, Slovakia, Poland).
