Destination summary
Canada as a nation is widely admired for its laid-back, liberal-minded, clean
and efficient way of life, making a pleasant alternative to the clutter and
spectacle south of the border.
Here lies a range of cultural and sporting activities, alongside an appreciation of all things natural, as you would only expect from those living on the banks of Lakes Ontario, Erie and the Niagara Falls.
The friendly Canadian way of mixing and matching different creeds and races
(and mostly without strife - take that, USA!) finds its most complete expression in Montreal: not just the second largest French-speaking city in the world, its a real melting pot of diverse influences.
Also popular are Vancouver, where the sports-mad locals are kept on ice (with skiing, snowboarding, hockey), and Toronto, the countrys centre of commerce, currently undergoing something of a renaissance following its downtown and harbour front development.
Flight summary
Unlike neighbouring USA, the market for Flights to Canada is much more open to competition. The main gateway for flights to Canada is Toronto, which has regular inbound scheduled links from London, Glasgow and Manchester, as well as less frequent season services from a small range of UK departure airports, including Birmingham, Exeter and Newcastle.
Although regional flights to Canada are much less widely available outside Toronto, direct flights from London are available to Ottawa, Montréal and Halifax in eastern Canada, as well as Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton in the west.
There is some variation in the availability of flights to Canada throughout the year, with many services oriented towards the ski market - especially flights to western Canada. A number of services to the east coast are more geared towards summer only operations, especially as they carry significant numbers of Canadians coming to visit the UK. Flights to Toronto are more likely to be available year-round, although there are also a number of seasonal services.
Connecting Flights
Continental Airlines offer onward connections via New York, but we generally advise avoiding traveling via the USA if you can. Flying via the US means you will have to deal with time consuming immigration and security procedures, even if you are just transferring from one flight to another within the same airport. A less stressful option involves flying to Canada via France. Air France has particularly strong links with cities in French-speaking Quebec, especially Montreal.
Domestic Flights
A huge range of domestic flights is available within Canada, with several low-cost operators complementing Air Canada's own vast network. Note that despite Canada's size, the majority of the population live on the eastern seaboard, with cities such as Ottawa and Montréal being within reasonably easy reach of Toronto. Flying around Canada is the best option if you have time constraints, but there are also some spectacular train journeys which are well worthy of consideration. The Rocky Mountain train between Vancouver and Banff is particularly impressive.

James Says
Unlike the UK or the USA, most cities in Canada are served by just one airport - in fact the Montreal's sprawling secondary airport, Mirabel, has stopped taking passenger flights after years of under-use. However, there are several airports which claim to serve the Toronto metro region. All flights to Toronto from the UK arrive into Pearson International airport (YYZ), which is one of North America's most important hubs. Flyglobespan used to offer flights to Toronto Hamilton airport (YHM), which is 50 miles from downtown Toronto. There are also a few shuttle flights to nearby cities within eastern Canada from the city centre Toronto Island airport (YTZ) – its not much use for transfers, but if you're already in Toronto, then it offers superb views of the Toronto cityscape on takeoff and landing. Abbotsford (YXX) is also an alternative to Vancouver for domestic flights within Canada.

Having said that, your list shows that there are still plenty of options for flying direct - and if you don't want the hassle of driving through the M25 pay and display car park, then why not look at flights from Manchester instead?
