The high price of tourist visas, and the requirement to travel on a guided tour, make Bhutan difficult, but by no means impossible to get to. The only airport in Bhutan with the facilities to handle international flights is at Paro (PBH), which is about 15 miles away from the capital city, Thimpu. The national airline, Druk Air, offer connecting flights to Paro Airport from a number of major airports in the surrounding region, including Kolkata in India and the Thai capital Bangkok.

Note that in addition to the government restrictions governing flights to Bhutan, Paro airport, which sits in a steep sided valley, is also subject to frequent bad weather delays. However, despite these difficulties, a journey to Bhutan, where "gross national happiness" is considered more important than the gross domestic product, is bound to be a highly rewarding experience.
