Flight summary

Argentina's location in the southern reaches of Latin America has not encouraged the development of strong transport links. Add to that the fact that the British and Argentine governments have hardly seen eye to eye over the last 30 years, it is easy to see why there are only a limited number of direct flights available from London to the capital Buenos Aires.

Outside Buenos Aires, no Argentine cities have long-haul links with anywhere outside of Latin America - see our flights to Buenos Aires section for more details about the best ways of reaching the Argentinian capital.

An extensive network of domestic flights fans out from Buenos Aires. Some other cities in Argentina can also be reached via airports in neighbouring countries, although the only other cities in the whole of South America with regular direct flights from the UK are Rio De Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

James Says

Aside from internal flights, most inter-city travel in Argentina is by road, either by car or long-distance bus. The Argentinian railway network has suffered from underinvestment for a long time, although the breakup of the state rail company Ferrocarriles Argentinos (FA) in 1993, and subsequent privatisation of the rail network into several different regional companies, brought about a short-term improvement in services. This soon became problematic after the private operators refused to make investment in track and rolling stock, fearing low returns on their capital.

Thankfully the Argentinian railway network looks set for a revival, centred on the showpiece high-speed railway between Buenos Aires, Rosario and Cordoba, which will be based on the French TGV system.

Congrats to the Royal Town's adopted son, Roberto Di Matteo, for guiding Chelsea to the biggest trophy in club football.
