Destination summary

This tiny principality - nestled between France and Spain, and with close links to Catalan culture - has risked being overlooked by travellers on account of its size. Yet the Andorran tourist industry has raised its game in recent decades, and tourism currently accounts for 80% of the country's GDP. That's chiefly down to an alluring combination of duty free prices, the spectacular scenery of the Pyrenees mountains, and good value ski resorts like Soldeu, Vallnord and Grandvalira.

Peaks such as the Coll Arenys and Pic de l'Estanyo lend themselves to hiking and mountain biking, whilst the capital, Andorra La Vella, itself sits upon a mountainside: squeezed onto these slopes, you'll find excellent shopping, and if the narrow streets start getting a bit too much, there's always the Caldea thermal health spa to retreat to. Altogether apt, given the principality's size, is the Miniature Museum - a perfectly composed reflection on what it is to be small.

Flight summary

Andorra does not have an airport, although there have been some proposals put forward to build one. This popular low-cost skiing centre can be reached via several airports in neighbouring France (Toulouse is the best option) or Spain (Barcelona and Girona).
