I'm looking at flights to St Lucia in April, but I'd rather use my local airport (Birmingham) if possible. Thing is, all I get is silly prices, taking me via Edinburgh or even Belfast, and then back down to London.

What is the point in that? I'm very loyal to Birmingham, as the staff are excellent, and it is nothing like as congested as Heathrow or Gatwick - but this is just pointless - and it still takes me via the airports I want to avoid anyway!

  Lionel, this is because the main carriers operating flights to St Lucia are just BA ad Virgin, and they both use Gatwick airport as a departure point. You will never find any "sensible" offers on these routings, because there aren't any natural feeder flights from Birmingham to London. You would have the same problem if you tried to find flights to phoenix from Birmingham - as BA as the only airline operating this route from Europe, you will either be given a "silly" routing, or you will be sent via New York.
  
  Unfortunately, to get to St Lucia via New York is a very long way round, so you are probably not getting any decent offers.
  
  So in this case, I'm afraid you will have to put your laudable loyalty to Birmingham to one side and make the treck down to Gatwick. St Lucia is stunning, it is well worth the effort!

How come there is so little competition on flights to St Lucia? Isn't this everyone's ideal honeymoon destination? We're thinking of going there for our 40th, but flights seem so expensive. We don't mind being there a few weeks either side, it is the years that count!

Any suggestions?

  B&M - you do at least have a nominal choice between BA and Virgin. St Lucia only has a limited number of hotels, and as you suggest is aimed at relatively high end "once in a lifetime" tourism, so I think these two airlines have it covered.
  
  See my flights to the Caribbean guide for a few cheapskate suggestions for getting there, but even taking a longer way round you are unlikely to save a great deal.
