Destination Summary
Arecibo might be larger in area than Puerto Rico's capital San Juan, but the city is perhaps best known to the outside world for the massive Arecibo Observatory. This huge dish was used to send the 'Arecibo message' into space in 1974. Although this was largely a demonstration, rather than a serious attempt to find extra-terrestrial life, Arecibo has acted as a backdrop for numerous works on the small and large screen, including the 1997 film Contact, and the closing scenes of the Bond thriller Goldeneye.
