Almaty is the biggest and most commercial city in Kazakhstan and is unusual in that it is surrounded by apple groves, even taking its name from the fruit ('alma' means 'apple' in Kazak). Not too far from the mountains of the region, orchards can be spotted almost everywhere, often leading towards some of the main streets. The city has various unique architectural sites, including the bath-house, Arasan, but the buildings are fairly modern because of the city being hit by earthquakes in 1887 and 1910.
