Thomson Airways is the third largest airline in the UK, with bases at Birmingham International, London Gatwick and Manchester. The holiday giant also operates flights from London Luton, London Stansted and most UK regional airports.

The Thomson brand seems to have been around forever. In fact, Thomson Airways only came into actuality in late 2008, the result of a merger between Thomsonfly (a spin-off from the popular travel agency launched in 1965 by Roy Thomson) and First Choice Airways that resulted in the creation of the worlds largest charter airline. The majority of the companys flights remain on behalf of tour operators, shuttling sunseekers between such traditional hotspots as the Costa Brava, Cancun and Egypt; chances are, if youve ever flown out pale and returned with a tan, itll have been on a Thomson flight.

In essence, the airline functions as part of a very 21st century, synergistic business model: after booking your holiday at via the Thomson website or a Thomson shop on the high street, you find yourself on a Thomson plane heading for a Thomson-flagged hotel. Yet for all its corporate trappings, the company is as well-loved as ever: indeed, Thomson took home the Passengers Choice award for Best Leisure Airline at the 2010 World Airline Awards. With nifty Art Attack-themed snack boxes for younger travellers, Aldo Zilli-inspired food for grown-ups and a makeover of both fleet and staff uniforms under way at the time of writing, this is one brand thats been keeping everybody happy: no surprise its logo should be a broad smile.
