Airline Profile

Some airlines are creations of the marketplace. When Swissair folded in 2002, SWISS emerged from the ashes to inherit both its predecessors status - as the flagship airline of Switzerland - and a hefty proportion of its debt. Canny management, however, led to the company posting consistent profits by the mid-Noughties, and Lufthansas takeover in 2005 provided vital financial support at a pivotal time in the companys existence. Yet rather than seek a formidable German-Swiss alliance, SWISS has maintained its independence: bucking industry trends, the airline has increased passenger volume by 50% in recent years. The launch of a new, no-frills subsidiary, SWISS Economy, has led to an expansion of flights from the companys Basel HQ, but SWISS operates its main traffic from its Zurich hub between business capitals across the globe. It is on short-haul flights though that the companys reputation rests. In 2008, SWISS ranked first among airlines in a Condé Nast poll; two years later, it topped Which? magazines Airline Satisfaction Survey. The company also took home a 2010 Skytrax Award for Staff Service Excellence.
