Airline Profile

As much a part of Australias national identity as Vegemite, didgeridoos and Shane Warne, Qantas began life in 1920 as an acronym - Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services - and even in this form, it provided the transportation for those most Aussie of heroes, the flying doctors.

Today, Qantass main hubs are Melbourne and Sydney, although the company also operates considerable long-haul traffic in and out of Auckland, Brisbane, Los Angeles International, London Heathrow and Singapore Changi. A low-budget subsidiary, Jetstar, offers flights to an exotic roster of tourist destinations, such as Bali, Ho Chi Minh City and Honolulu.

Like many of its rivals, Qantas has had to submit to belt-tightening measures in recent years, reducing the number of first class seats on some of its shorter international flights, and phasing out Boeing 747-800 services (in December 2008); a new, more spacious Airbus A380 has picked up the slack. By and large, though, passengers appear content that the company has maintained the high level of service that saw Qantas earn a four-star rating from the independent watchdog Skytrax. In-flight meals, in particular, are highly regarded - no raw prawns here (apologies for the shameless Alf Stewart reference) - and tipplers expecting nothing but Fosters on tap may be surprised that Qantas can boast a full contingent of Sky Awards for wine. In short: its fair dinkum, mate.
