Malaysia Airlines (often incorrectly written as Malaysian Airlines) are based at the uber-modern Kuala Lumpur International airport, which is situated about 50 miles south of the Malaysian capital.

This vast and extremely expensive facility replaced the ageing Subang airport. Our understanding is that Malaysia Airlines get preferential treatment at Kuala Lumpur International, which discourages other airlines such as British Airways from offering flights to Malaysia.

Malaysias national flagcarrier has a peculiar fondness for the letter K. Operating from its primary base at Kuala Lumpur International from where it flies to 87 destinations across six continents the company (or should it be kompany?) maintains secondary hubs at the rapidly expanding Kuching International and at Kota Kinabalu, the countrys second busiest airport. Alongside the many exotic medium and long-haul routes the airline provides across the Asia and the Indian Ocean (think Brunei, Cambodia, Myanmar and the Maldives), Malaysia has also become a prominent player on the so-called Kangaroo route between Europe and Australasia, with a low-cost subsidiary, Firefly, handling domestic traffic. A love of tinkering embedded within the companys corporate culture it operates a profitable sideline in aircraft maintenance and overhaul is perhaps responsible for Malaysia Airlines possessing one of the best safety records in the business.

Its not just in the field of safety that the airline excels: its one of only six airlines in the world to merit a full five-star rating from the independent observer Skytrax. As some industry critics have noted, Malaysia hasnt as yet made the investment demonstrated by rivals Thai Airways and Singapore Airlines, leading to a marked inconsistency of service on some of the airlines domestic flights; and while legroom is generally ample, seats and interiors on the companys fleet can appear tired and dated. That said, most travellers appear pleased with Malaysias courteous and thoughtful attendants, and the new-look in-flight menus, with their signature satay appetisers and ice cream desserts. Innovations include the Portable Media Player, a hand-held flatscreen available on selected regional and long-haul flights, and the Grads for Students scheme, a frequent-flyer program for students over the age of twelve.
