Airline Profile
Founded in 1951 as part of the rebuilding of Japan in the aftermath of World War II Japan Airlines (JAL) became the countrys flagcarrier two years later. Along with a low-cost subsidiary, JAL Express, the airline currently flies to 161 destinations around the globe from four main hubs: Tokyos two major airports, Narita International and Tokyo International, plus Chubu Centrair International in Nagoya and Kansai International in Osaka.
The impressive number of destinations may soon be reduced, however: the company was obliged to file for bankruptcy in early 2010, and pressure is on to cut both staff and unprofitable routes. Ironically, JALs ticket prices are generally cheaper than its Asian rivals Thai and Singapore but passengers have already reported a reduction in the size of the in-flight meals and other services, too.
