With the maple leaf proudly emblazoned on its tailfin, the grand old man of North American air travel first took off in 1936 to serve remote Canadian communities, but can nowadays just as likely be found jetting into and out of its main hubs in Calgary, Montreal, Toronto Pearson and Vancouver.

Air Canada has stepped boldly into the modern age in recent years thanks to Project XM Extreme Makeover, an in-house enterprise that despite sounding like another tacky reality series has brought a greater selection of in-flight entertainment to its passengers. Independent forums suggest seating and food options could also do with a once-over, but the courteous customer service remains a strong selling point.
