Sterling Airways were a no-frills operator based at Copenhagen Kastrup in Denmark until they went bust in October 2008. In 2005, Sterling acquired the aviation business of the Maersk transport conglomerate, taking over their route between London Gatwick and Copenhagen. Sterling's bright red aircraft might not have been that familiar in the crowded UK no-frills market place, but they were one of the few airlines to have made inroads into the main Scandinavian hubs, where high charging regimes keep many other operators out.
