Air India offer flights from London to several cities within India, with their major hub being at Bombay (Mumbai). Air India also offers flights to New York and Chicago from London Heathrow, and although they are not renowned for their punctuality, the Indian national carrier often offers very competitive fares, especially in business class.
In 2005, Air India started their first flights to a British regional airport with the opening of a route from Toronto to Delhi and Amritsar operating through Birmingham. With the Indian economy showing no sign of slowing down, and onerous restrictions governing flights between the UK and India finally being lifted, Air India are expected to open up more routes from the UK in the future.
However, the airline faces intense home-grown competition from emerging airlines such as Jet Airways, as well as the three British airlines offering flights from London Heathrow to India.
