Resting gently on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, Tampa forms one point in the triangle of popular Florida destinations. If Miami can be labelled party central, and the Disneyfied Orlando a venue for the young (and young at heart), then Tampa presents itself as an older, wiser, altogether more colourful character. Its two closest rivals may be mere callow kid-cities, but - despite such frivolities as Busch Gardens, scene of the highest, wildest, biggest rollercoasters in the world, and the popular water park Adventure Gardens - Tampa proves more port than resort, giving out a sense of a metropolis whose streets have really lived.
Get a feel for the history and craft that’s been handed down from one generation to the next by strolling around Ybor City, a Cuban-Spanish neighbourhood once home to a thriving cigar-making industry. And Miami’s multiplexes, screening popcorn fodder for waves of partygoers waiting for the next club to open, have nothing on the Tampa Theatre, dating from the silent era and these days preserved for a higher class of celluloid.
The Tampa Bay area is blessed with great natural resources: distinguished not so much by the usual West Coast trifecta of sun, sea and surf, though these, too, are plentiful, but by its clear springs, and landscapes so far untouched by rapacious developers. Worth adding to the day-trip itinerary is Fort Myers, a city with some considerable history behind it (it played home, at one time or another, to Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and the Seminole Indians) and beach/parkland areas to be enjoyed.
Sarasota and St. Petersburg stand as reminders of what a wealth of generously funded, carefully curated arts venues America can boast in even its smaller cities. And resorts like Sanibel and Captiva, despite sounding suspiciously like feminine hygiene products, have been tailored to meet all the needs of the burgeoning fly-drive market: take the hire car out there, spend an afternoon in their swanky boutiques, and watch the sun go down from a nearby lagoon, before dining in one of the resorts’ many fine restaurants.
